The bill amends the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship program to make students in workforce-ready certificate programs at the Community College of Rhode Island eligible for the scholarship. Key changes include the insertion of definitions for terms such as "accredited certificate," which clarifies the types of qualifications eligible for the scholarship. The bill specifies that students must graduate with an accredited certificate or associate degree within two years of enrollment, although it recognizes that some professional programs may require an extended time period.
Additionally, the bill outlines new eligibility requirements, including provisions for students who enrolled in a postsecondary institution immediately following high school graduation or receipt of a high school equivalency diploma but remained for only one semester. It allows these students to enroll at the Community College of Rhode Island in the following semester and qualify for the scholarship. Furthermore, any student may defer initial enrollment for one semester with an approved written request and reason and still qualify for the scholarship.
The act will take effect upon passage.
