The bill amends Section 11-47-5 of the General Laws concerning the possession of firearms by certain individuals. It introduces new language that explicitly prohibits individuals who have been convicted of a felony, or who have entered a plea of nolo contendere to a felony, from purchasing or possessing firearms. The bill specifies that individuals violating this provision will face imprisonment for not more than ten years, with the first two years of the sentence not eligible for suspension.

Additionally, the bill maintains existing prohibitions for individuals who are fugitives from justice, under community confinement, or subject to electronic monitoring as a condition of parole. It also ensures that individuals subject to restraining orders cannot possess firearms. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
