The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution recognizing the celebration of the Cambodian New Year, known as Choul Chnam Thmey, which takes place from April 14 to 16, 2025. This holiday marks the end of the harvesting season and is associated with the Zodiac animal for the year, which in 2025 will be "The Year of the Snake." The three-day celebration includes various traditional activities: the first day, Moha Sangkran, symbolizes renewal and involves cleaning and decorating homes; the second day, Wanabot, focuses on honoring elders and charitable giving; and the third day, Thhnay Leung Sakk, marks the official start of the new year with temple visits and acts of contrition.
The resolution expresses the House's respect and appreciation for the contributions of the Rhode Island Cambodian community to the state's cultural diversity. It also authorizes the Secretary of State to send a certified copy of the resolution to Suonriaksmay Keo, the President of the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island, Inc., to acknowledge and celebrate this important cultural event.
Introduced by Representatives Slater, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Diaz, and Chippendale on April 10, the resolution has been read and passed in the House.
