The Rhode Island General Assembly passed legislation on April 2, 1925, that established the Rhode Island State Police, creating a disciplined and mobile police organization to address emerging enforcement challenges, particularly those related to the automobile. The founding statute uniquely centralized authority and accountability in the office of the Superintendent, who was mandated to report directly to the Governor. This legislation also outlined the responsibilities of the Superintendent, authorized the appointment of department members, and provided for the establishment of headquarters and substations to ensure effective law enforcement across rural and suburban areas.

As the Rhode Island State Police approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025, the Senate has resolved to celebrate this milestone by designating April as State Police Month and April 2 as State Police Day. The resolution acknowledges the department's significant contributions to law enforcement, its historical ties to the state, and its role in training and supporting other law enforcement agencies. The Secretary of State is tasked with transmitting a certified copy of this resolution to the current Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, Colonel Darnell S. Weaver.
