The resolution recognizes Parkinson’s Disease as a significant public health issue, being the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the U.S. and the 14th leading cause of death. It highlights the alarming statistics surrounding the disease, noting that approximately one million Americans are currently living with Parkinson's, with nearly 90,000 new diagnoses each year. In Rhode Island, the number of individuals affected ranges from one to two thousand. The resolution emphasizes the complexity of the disease, which can manifest through a variety of symptoms and currently lacks a definitive cause, objective diagnostic tests, or a cure.

In light of these challenges, the resolution calls for increased awareness and research efforts to improve treatment options and quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s Disease. To promote this cause, the Senate of Rhode Island proclaims April 2025 as "Parkinson’s Awareness Month" and directs the Secretary of State to send a certified copy of the resolution to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Rhode Island Chapter, to further support awareness and advocacy initiatives.
