The bill amends Section 42-56-22 of the General Laws in Chapter 42-56, which pertains to the Corrections Department. It increases the minimum wage for individuals committed to adult correctional institutions from three dollars ($3.00) to five dollars ($5.00) a day for every day they labor. The bill allows for labor by persons committed on mesne process or to answer criminal charges at the discretion of the director or their designee. The earnings from such labor will be credited to the prisoner's account and disbursed according to institutional rules. Additionally, the bill specifies that at least twenty-five percent of each prisoner's earnings must be maintained in an account for their release. The act will take effect upon passage.
