The bill amends Chapter 12-5 of the General Laws by adding a new section titled "Warrant for a tracking device." This section defines a "tracking device" as an electronic or mechanical device that permits the tracking of the movement of a person or object. It establishes the requirements for obtaining a warrant for the installation and use of such a device, including the necessity for the warrant to state the date of issuance, the grounds for probable cause, and a command for law enforcement to complete the installation within ten days of issuance. The warrant must also identify the person or property to be tracked and specify a reasonable length of time for the device's installation, which must not exceed fifteen days from the date of issuance. The court may grant one or more extensions for good cause, with each extension not exceeding fifteen days. The act will take effect upon passage.
