The bill amends Title 34 of the General Laws by adding a new chapter, CHAPTER 50, which pertains to public auctions of real estate conducted by cities and towns in Rhode Island. It stipulates that public auctions of real estate or an interest therein must be held in person at the time and place specified in the legal advertisement, in accordance with Rhode Island statutes governing such sales. Electronic or remote auctions are prohibited unless authorized by a court order from the Rhode Island Superior Court, following a hearing that determines that an in-person auction is not feasible under the specific circumstances of the case. The purpose of this legislation is to bring greater public scrutiny to the public auction sales of real estate in Rhode Island. The act will take effect immediately upon passage.
