The bill amends Title 11 of the General Laws by adding a new chapter, Chapter 71, titled "Disarming a Peace Officer." It establishes that any person who knowingly removes or attempts to remove a firearm, deadly weapon, or less-lethal weapon, including but not limited to any blunt impact, chemical, or conducted energy device, from the person of a peace officer, as defined in 12-7-21, or an investigator of the Department of Attorney General appointed pursuant to 42-9-8.1, shall be deemed to have committed a felony. Additionally, the bill specifies that knowingly depriving or attempting to deprive the use of a mobile communication device or radio used in the performance of official duty from such officers also constitutes a felony. If convicted, the individual would face imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than five years. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
