The bill amends Section 24-8-11 of the General Laws in Chapter 24-8, which pertains to the construction and maintenance of state roads. It authorizes the Department of Transportation to plant trees, shrubs, forbs, and grasses, and to beautify the area within the limits of a roadway, including state highways, in a manner and at locations deemed advisable by the department. The bill emphasizes the inclusion of pollinator-friendly native species in these plantings and mandates that the department seek suggestions from apiarists, horticulturists, and other certified professionals to identify appropriate types of plants and locations that benefit pollinators, defined as insects including, but not limited to, bees that assist in the pollination process.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that all activities performed by the Department of Transportation to benefit pollinators on roadsides and state highways shall be consistent with the best practices required in 23 U.S.C. 332. The cost of the work shall be paid by the director of transportation. The act will take effect upon its passage.
