The bill amends the membership structure of the State Crime Laboratory Commission by increasing the number of members from five to nine. The new members include the chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the president of the Rhode Island Bar Association, the public defender, and the president of the Rhode Island Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. The commission will also retain the attorney general, the superintendent of state police, and a representative of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs.
Additionally, the bill changes the title of the commission's administrative leaders from "executive secretary" to "co-executive secretaries," with the deans of the Colleges of Pharmacy and Engineering at the University of Rhode Island serving in this capacity. The co-executive secretaries will oversee the administration of the state crime laboratory, including budgetary and personnel matters, and will provide timely reports to the commission. This act will take effect upon passage.
