The bill amends the membership structure of the State Crime Laboratory Commission by increasing the number of members from five to nine. The new members include the chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the president of the Rhode Island Bar Association, the public defender, and the president of the Rhode Island Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Additionally, the bill changes the title of the executive secretary to co-executive secretaries, with the deans of the Colleges of Pharmacy and Engineering at the University of Rhode Island serving in this role. The co-executive secretaries will oversee the administration of the state crime laboratory, including budgetary and personnel matters, and will be responsible for providing timely reports to the commission. This act will take effect upon passage.
