The bill amends Chapter 13-13 of the General Laws, titled "Interstate Detainers," by adding a new section, 13-13-9, which mandates that all state law enforcement agencies, including the division of sheriffs and the department of corrections, must honor detainer requests from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Under this new provision, any individual subject to a detainer request or hold, of which the state agency is aware, must be kept in custody until ICE can take over custody of that individual.

This legislation aims to ensure cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities by requiring the detention of individuals with immigration holds. The act is set to take effect immediately upon its passage.
