This resolution commemorates the 82nd anniversary of the heroic actions of the Four Chaplains—George Fox, Alexander Goode, Clark Poling, and John Washington—who sacrificed their lives during World War II aboard the SS Dorchester. On February 3, 1943, the troop ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat while en route to support Allied forces. Amidst the chaos and panic following the explosion, the Chaplains selflessly distributed their own life jackets to fellow soldiers and remained on deck to assist others until the ship sank, ultimately perishing along with 670 others.
In recognition of their extraordinary bravery, numerous memorials have been established, including a stained glass window in the Pentagon Chapel and the Four Chaplains' Medal, which was awarded posthumously by Congress in 1960. The resolution calls for the State of Rhode Island to honor the memory of these four men of God and directs the Secretary of State to transmit certified copies of the resolution to relevant officials, ensuring that their legacy of sacrifice and heroism is remembered.
