The resolution commemorates the 82nd anniversary of the "Four Chaplains," who heroically sacrificed their lives during World War II aboard the SS Dorchester. On February 3, 1943, the troop ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, leading to chaos as survivors scrambled for lifeboats. In the midst of this turmoil, four chaplains—George Fox, Alexander Goode, Clark Poling, and John Washington—selflessly gave away their own life jackets to save others, ultimately perishing in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

In recognition of their extraordinary bravery, numerous memorials have been established, including a stained glass window in the Pentagon Chapel and the Four Chaplains' Medal awarded posthumously by Congress. The resolution calls for the State of Rhode Island to honor these four men of God and their sacrifice. It also directs the Secretary of State to transmit certified copies of the resolution to relevant officials, including the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Veterans Affairs.
