The bill proposes the repeal of Section 3-7-19 of the General Laws in Chapter 3-7, which previously restricted the issuance of certain retail licenses (Class B, C, N, and I) based on their proximity to schools and places of worship. Specifically, it eliminates the requirement for objections from property owners within 200 feet of an establishment and the prohibition of licenses if located within 200 feet of a public, private, or parochial school or a place of worship.
In its place, a new section titled "Objection by adjoining property owners Proximity to schools and churches" is introduced, which does not retain the previous limitations, thereby allowing for greater flexibility in granting retail licenses.
The bill also empowers local councils and boards of licenses to grant exemptions for specific Class B, Class C, and other retailer licenses in designated locations across various municipalities, including Central Falls, Providence, and others. This streamlined process enables local governing bodies to exercise discretion in licensing, promoting economic development while accommodating the unique needs of each community.
The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
