The bill amends Chapter 40-8 of the General Laws, titled "Medical Assistance," by adding a new section, 40-8-33, which provides for Medicaid reimbursement for services rendered by graduate student interns in mental health professional disciplines. These interns must be formally assigned to an agency or facility for clinical training by an accredited college or university. The bill stipulates that these interns are eligible to receive compensation for their reimbursed hours, and the supervising organization may retain a portion of this compensation to cover expenses related to supervisory work. Furthermore, it establishes that a mental health practitioner working as a clinical trainee must either comply with the requirements for licensure or board certification as a mental health professional, including supervised practice in delivering mental health services for the treatment of mental illness, or be a graduate student in a bona fide field placement or internship under a program leading to the completion of the requirements for licensure as a mental health professional. This act will take effect upon passage.
