The Rhode Island House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to proclaim February 2025 as American Heart Month in the state. This initiative aims to raise awareness about heart disease, which affects one in four Americans and has resulted in significant mortality rates, including 217 deaths per 100,000 Rhode Islanders in 2022. The resolution highlights the primary risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use, and emphasizes the importance of heart health and the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
To support American Heart Month, the resolution encourages citizens to wear red and engage in various activities to promote heart health, including using social media to share information, learning CPR, starting fitness challenges, and volunteering with organizations focused on heart health. The resolution has been read and passed by the House and directs the Secretary of State to send certified copies to the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health and the American Heart Association in Rhode Island.
