This bill amends Section 45-21-54 of the General Laws in Chapter 45-21 to allow retired members of the retirement system to reenter the service for up to 75 working days in a calendar year without interrupting their pension benefits. However, pension payments are suspended if the retired member exceeds this 75-day limit. The bill also specifies that this rule does not apply to police officers or any peace officer working in a Rhode Island school as a full or part-time school resource officer for private details paid for by a non-governmental entity. If a retired member continues to work beyond the 75-day period, their annuity is temporarily suspended and they are not eligible for pension credit for the additional service. However, retired members are still allowed to serve as elected city or town council members or school committee members and receive retirement allowances for service other than their council or committee membership. The bill will take effect upon passage.
