The bill amends Section 45-21-54 of the General Laws regarding the reemployment of retired municipal employees. It allows retired members of the system to reenter service for up to seventy-five (75) working days in a calendar year without affecting their pension benefits. However, if they exceed this period, their pension payments will be suspended. The bill specifically exempts police officers, as defined in 28-9.2-3, and any peace officers, as defined in 12-7-21, working in a Rhode Island school as full or part-time school resource officers from the seventy-five-day limit when working private details paid by a nongovernmental entity.
Additionally, the bill clarifies that retired members who continue working beyond the seventy-five-day limit will not receive pension credit for that extra service and will not be required to make pension contributions. It also maintains that retired members can serve as elected city or town council members or school committee members while still receiving their retirement allowance for other services. The act is set to take effect upon passage.
