The bill amends Section 11-47-20 of the General Laws regarding the sale or possession of silencers, making it unlawful to possess or use a firearm shorter than seventeen inches (17”) with any attached muffler or silencer, with exceptions for law enforcement officers acting within their official duties. The bill introduces a new provision that violations of this section will result in imprisonment for a minimum of one year and one day.

Additionally, the bill adds a new section, 20-13-19, to Chapter 20-13 concerning hunting regulations. This section allows individuals in lawful possession of a silencing device to use it while hunting, provided they have a valid hunting license and the firearm is permitted. Furthermore, it prohibits any local or state agency from enacting rules that mandate the use of such devices. The act will take effect upon passage.
