The Rhode Island Senate has introduced a resolution, SR 81, expressing condolences on the passing of Joseph A. Gilmartin, a respected history teacher and accomplished coach from North Kingstown. Gilmartin, who was married to Mary Barden, the Executive Director of the National Education Association of Rhode Island, was recognized for his dedication to teaching and his significant influence on his students. He notably transformed the North Kingstown High School football program into a championship-winning team, achieving a remarkable 30-5 record from 2013 to 2017 and winning the Division II Super Bowl Championship in 2017.

In addition to his contributions in education and coaching, Gilmartin was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and fisherman, actively involved in the Rhode Island Shellfisherman's Association. He is survived by his wife, three children, and several siblings. The resolution honors his memory and extends condolences to his family, acknowledging the loss felt by the community.

The resolution was introduced by Senators DiMario and Lawson on January 28 and has been recommended for immediate consideration.
