The bill amends Section 31-6-8 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-6, which pertains to registration fees for disabled veterans. It establishes that any veteran who has been honorably discharged and has suffered significant injuries or disabilities related to their service may be issued "Disabled Veteran" registration plates. The bill specifies that these plates can be used on personal or certain commercial vehicles.

Additionally, the bill introduces provisions for the transfer of these "Disabled Veteran" plates. If a veteran is certified as no longer able to operate a vehicle, the plates may be transferred to their spouse during the veteran's lifetime. Upon the death of the initial registrant of the plates, the plates may be transferred to the surviving spouse, who may retain them for their lifetime or until they remarry. The bill clarifies that only one set of "Disabled Veteran" plates will be issued to an eligible veteran or their spouse, contingent upon the presentation of satisfactory documentation of eligibility from the Veterans Administration. The act will take effect upon passage.
