The bill amends Section 45-21-54 of the General Laws concerning the reemployment of retired municipal employees. It increases the allowable working days for retired members to reenter service without interrupting their pension benefits from seventy-five (75) days to ninety (90) days in a calendar year. If a retired member exceeds this ninety-day limit, their pension payments will be suspended, but they will not be eligible for pension credit or required to make contributions for any additional service beyond this period. Notably, this rule does not apply to police officers working private details paid by nongovernmental entities.
Additionally, the bill clarifies that retired members can serve as elected city or town council members or school committee members while still receiving their retirement allowance for other services. The changes aim to provide greater flexibility for retired municipal employees wishing to reenter the workforce while maintaining their pension benefits. The act will take effect upon passage.
