The House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island has introduced a resolution expressing condolences on the passing of Joseph Michael Downey, known as Michael Downey. He was born in Providence to James and Patricia Downey and was the beloved husband of Claudette Downey for nearly fifty years. Michael Downey had a distinguished career as a plumber, serving the state for thirty-seven years and achieving the position of Chief Plumbing Investigator. He was also a prominent labor leader, advocating for the rights of Rhode Island State workers as the President of union Local 528 and later as the President of AFSCME Council 94, which represents over ten thousand state employees.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Downey was actively involved in his local community, serving on the Charlestown Town Council and various boards, including the Rhode Island Retirement Board and the Veterans Memorial Museum. He was a passionate sports fan and enjoyed spending time in his community. He is survived by his wife Claudette, their children, and grandchildren. The resolution concludes with the House expressing its condolences to the Downey family and directing the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to Mrs. Claudette Downey.
