The Rhode Island House of Representatives has passed a resolution expressing condolences on the passing of Joseph A. Gilmartin, a respected history teacher and accomplished coach from North Kingstown. Mr. Gilmartin, who was married to Mary Barden, the Executive Director of the National Education Association of Rhode Island, was recognized for his dedication to teaching and his significant influence on his students. He notably transformed the North Kingstown High School football program into a championship-winning team, achieving a 30-5 record and securing the Division II Super Bowl Championship in 2017.
In addition to his educational and coaching contributions, Mr. Gilmartin was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and fisherman, actively involved in the Rhode Island Shellfisherman's Association. He is survived by his wife, three children, and several siblings, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The resolution acknowledges the deep loss felt by his family, friends, and the community, emphasizing his legacy as a positive influence in many lives. The House has authorized the Secretary of State to send certified copies of the resolution to Mr. Gilmartin's family members.
