The resolution expresses profound sadness over the passing of the Most Reverend Louis E. Gelineau, Bishop Emeritus of Providence, who died on November 7, 2024. Bishop Gelineau, who served as the sixth Bishop of Providence and was the second longest-serving bishop in the diocese's history, was born on May 3, 1928, in Burlington, Vermont. He was ordained a priest in 1954 and held various positions within the Diocese of Burlington before being appointed Bishop of Providence by Pope Paul VI in 1971. Throughout his tenure, he emphasized pastoral engagement, established programs for permanent deacons, and initiated outreach projects, including the Providence-Haiti Outreach project.
The resolution highlights Bishop Gelineau's significant contributions to the Catholic community in Rhode Island, noting his dedication to serving the faithful and his innovative approaches to diocesan administration. After retiring in 1997, he continued to support the community and was recognized with the Lumen Gentium award in 2017 for his contributions. The House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island extends its deepest condolences to the Diocese of Providence and acknowledges the lasting impact Bishop Gelineau had on the diocese and its parishioners, referring to him as "The People's Bishop."
