WJAR-TV, the first television station in Rhode Island, began broadcasting on July 10, 1949, and has since been known for its innovative contributions to media broadcasting. This includes being one of the first to process and air film on the same day, conducting one of the earliest live helicopter video broadcasts in 1955, and featuring the first television meteorologist in Rhode Island.
The station has a history of going above and beyond in its service to the community, such as providing a crucial live link during the Blizzard of 1978 and hosting a live Town Hall with President Bill Clinton in 1994.
