The Senate of the State of Rhode Island has expressed its profound sorrow upon learning of the death of George A. Donovan, a respected resident of East Providence and the cherished husband of the late Lois Donovan for fifty years. George Donovan, who was born in Providence and was a lifelong resident of East Providence, served with honor in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He was also a dedicated educator, teaching history, photography, and video production at Central Junior High School and East Providence High School. His commitment to education was recognized when he received the “Outstanding Educator” Award in 1985, and he held the position of Past President of the Rhode Island Social Studies Association.

In addition to his teaching career, George Donovan was a skilled photographer and audio-visual specialist, contributing to WJAR-TV as a TV news photographer and volunteering with the East Providence Fire Department for over forty years. He was deeply involved in his community, participating in various civic and charitable organizations, including the East Providence Citizens Advisory Committee for Cable Television and the East Providence Historical Society. George Donovan is survived by his children and grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. The Senate has resolved to extend its condolences to his family and has directed the Secretary of State to transmit certified copies of this resolution to his children.
