On May 11, 2023, the House of Representatives established a commission to study and provide recommendations on services and coordination of state programs for older adults in Rhode Island. The commission aims to conduct a comprehensive study and offer suggestions for funding services through various grants, aiming for more efficient use of funds and effective service delivery in anticipation of the increase in the aging population over the next seven years. The commission has made significant progress, completing half of the work required for a strategic plan. To further this work, specialized expertise is needed, and a strategic planning consultant is to be engaged to develop a comprehensive and actionable 2030 Aging Plan.
The resolution proposes an appropriation of $250,000 to support the development of the 2030 Aging Plan. This sum includes $200,000 for hiring a strategic planning consultant through a competitive process, $25,000 for the Rhode Island Office on Healthy Aging to facilitate outreach and community engagement, and $25,000 for the State Division on Planning to cover staffing and administrative costs. The consultant will work with various stakeholders to gather input, analyze data, and draft strategies to meet the needs of Rhode Island's aging population. The 2030 Aging Plan is expected to be completed by July 2025 and will be a crucial step in enhancing the well-being of aging residents and creating a more age-friendly Rhode Island. The resolution authorizes the state controller to release the funds upon receipt of properly authenticated vouchers.
