The United Way of Rhode Island has been operating the 2-1-1 service since 2007, offering free and confidential assistance to Rhode Islanders in nearly 200 languages, 24/7, every day of the year. This service connects individuals to a variety of resources, including housing, child care, health care, food, shelter, tax preparation, and utility assistance. The data collected from 2-1-1 interactions also help state departments understand and respond to the evolving needs of the community. In 2023 alone, the service received over 120,000 requests, with a significant number concerning housing, food, health care, and utilities. Additionally, 2-1-1 plays a vital role in disseminating information during state emergencies such as natural disasters.
In recognition of the importance of the 2-1-1 service, a resolution has been proposed to allocate $500,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act funds to the United Way of Rhode Island. This funding is intended to support the operational needs of the 2-1-1 system. The resolution authorizes the state controller to release the funds as needed upon receipt of properly authenticated vouchers. The legislative council has provided an explanation that this resolution aims to make an appropriation to the United Way of Rhode Island specifically for the support of the 2-1-1 human services hotline.
