The bill amends Section 36-10-1 of the General Laws in Chapter 36-10 entitled "Retirement System Contributions and Benefits" to change the contribution rates for certain members of the retirement system. Specifically, it introduces a new provision that, effective July 1, 2024, state employees who are employed as environmental police officers by the department of environmental management will contribute an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of their compensation to the retirement system. This is an insertion into the current law, which previously did not specify a contribution rate for this group of employees.

Additionally, the bill amends Section 36-10.3-1, which defines terms related to the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan. It adds language to exclude environmental police officers employed by the department of environmental management from the definition of "employee" effective July 1, 2024. Furthermore, the bill introduces a new section, 36-10-9.8, which provides that, effective July 1, 2024, environmental police officers will be entitled to the benefits provided by sections of title 45 related to optional retirement for members of the police force and firefighters. The bill is set to take effect upon passage.
