The bill proposes an amendment to Chapter 16-21 of the General Laws, titled "Health and Safety of Pupils," by adding a new section that mandates the development of informational materials on type 1 diabetes. This new section, 16-21-42, requires the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), in consultation with the Department of Health, to create and make available multilingual informational materials on type 1 diabetes for parents and guardians of students. These materials are to be provided in at least the three most common foreign languages used by the parents of public school students and will be accessible through RIDE's website.
The bill specifies that starting January 1, 2025, the governing boards of school districts, charter schools, and mayoral academies must ensure that these informational materials are accessible to the parent or guardian of every student upon their first enrollment in elementary school. The content of the materials will include a description of type 1 diabetes, risk factors, warning signs, recommendations for consulting with a primary care provider for screening and diagnosis, and information on the screening process and subsequent treatment plans. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
