The bill proposes amendments to the General Laws to require health insurance contracts, plans, or policies in the state to cover naturopathy for services performed by licensed individuals starting January 1, 2025. It also introduces a requirement for insurers to collect data on the cost and performance of naturopathic care, comparing it with traditional medical care, and to report on the number of claims and services provided for overlapping treatments between naturopathic and allopathic physicians. Insurers must submit an annual report on this data to the speaker of the house, the president of the senate, and the governor from January 1, 2025, through January 1, 2028, after which these provisions will expire.
Additionally, the bill amends the laws to ensure that coverage for mental health and substance use disorders is provided on the same terms as other medical conditions, without annual or lifetime dollar limitations, and that treatment limitations for these disorders are not more restrictive than those for other medical conditions. It also includes coverage for medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders and access to non-opioid treatment for pain. The bill does not specify any deletions from current law. The entire act will take effect on January 1, 2025, and will sunset on January 2, 2028.
