The bill seeks to amend the General Laws concerning health insurance coverage for hearing aids by increasing the coverage amount from $1,500 to $2,000 per ear, every three years, effective January 1, 2025. It removes the previous coverage amount of $700 per ear every three years for individuals aged 19 years and older. The enhanced coverage applies to various health insurance contracts, including individual or group health insurance contracts, hospital or medical expense insurance policies, plans, or group policies delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed within the state. Additionally, the bill introduces the option for insurers to offer a rider for extra coverage for hearing aids, though this does not extend to policies under the small employer health insurance availability act.

The definition of "hearing aid" remains unchanged, referring to a nonexperimental, wearable device for the ear intended to aid impaired hearing, excluding accessories like batteries and cords. The bill also specifies that insurers retain the discretion to select their hearing aid providers and are not prohibited from managed care, medical necessity, or utilization review practices. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage, ensuring the updated coverage amounts are implemented promptly.
