The resolution honors Ambassador Luis Gilberto Murillo for his remarkable achievements and extensive experience in public policy, sustainable development, environmental protection, social inclusion, and peace building. Born in Chocó, Colombia, Murillo has an impressive educational background with degrees in Mining Engineering and Engineering Sciences. His career highlights include serving as Governor of Chocó, Director General of the Corporation for Sustainable Development of Chocó, Director of the Presidential Initiative Todos Somos Pazcífico, and as Colombia's first Afro-Colombian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. He was also a presidential candidate in 2022 and later the Vice Presidential candidate for Sergio Fajardo's campaign.
Ambassador Murillo has been an advocate for environmental restoration and natural regeneration. Academically, he has taught at various universities, been a Research Fellow, a Martin Luther King Scholar at MIT, and an adviser to the Environmental Solutions Initiative. Despite surviving a political abduction and fleeing to the U.S. for political asylum, Murillo continued his work and was named Colombia’s first Black Ambassador to the United States in 2022. The resolution welcomes Ambassador Murillo to the Rhode Island State House, extends good wishes for his continued success, and directs the Secretary of State to send him a certified copy of the resolution.
