The resolution acknowledges the first Juneteenth Awards Luncheon hosted by BLM RI PAC on June 17th, 2023, which aims to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the representation and inclusivity of underrepresented communities in the legislature. Maria Lopes, the first Black woman elected to the Rhode Island State Legislature, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for her pioneering role in empowering women and addressing issues faced by minority communities during her service from 1989 to 2001.

Additionally, the Legislative Champion Award will be presented to Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, a former member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives who served the 5th District from 2017 to 2022. Ranglin-Vassell is recognized for her advocacy for equitable living wages, doula service access, gun violence prevention, and education. The resolution congratulates both honorees for their impactful work and directs the Secretary of State to provide certified copies of the resolution to the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island Political Action Committee, Maria Lopes, and Marcia Ranglin-Vassell.
