The bill proposes an amendment to Section 25-1-1 of the General Laws in Chapter 25-1, which is entitled "Holidays." The amendment includes the addition of the last day of Ramadan, in accordance with the Islamic calendar, as a recognized state holiday. If the last day of Ramadan falls on a Saturday or Sunday, state employees will celebrate the holiday on the following Monday. This insertion is the only change to the existing list of holidays that are enumerated in the law.

The bill specifies that this new holiday will be observed by state employees and will be added to the list of other recognized holidays, such as New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Rhode Island Independence Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Christmas Day, election day, Sundays, and any other days designated by the governor, general assembly, president, or congress. The act will take effect immediately upon passage.
