This bill amends Section 9-1-50 of the General Laws to require that any claim settled by an insurance company or other responsible party must be paid within thirty days of the claimant or their attorney sending the release. Failure to make payment within thirty days will be presumed to be a willful and wanton disregard for the claimant's rights. The bill also allows for the signed release to be transmitted electronically. If payment is not made within the specified time, the payor will be liable for punitive damages and interest. The bill also gives priority to any claim brought under this section on the trial calendar. The bill will take effect upon passage.
