HOUSE RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE
HENRY JOSEPH NARDONE, SR.

1 WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Henry
2 Joseph Nardone, Sr., the devoted husband for seventy years to the late Mary Frances Nardone;
3 and
4 WHEREAS, Mr. Nardone was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School and
5 Westerly High School. He attended the University of Rhode Island, then proceeded to join the
6 United States Navy. He completed Naval Studies at Yale University, earned his Bachelor of
7 Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from URI, and completed Midshipman’s School at
8 Columbia University. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, who served our
9 nation with honor and distinction and earned the rank of Lieutenant; and
10 WHEREAS, After World War II, Mr. Nardone served as head of the Physics Department
11 at the Naval Preparatory School in Annapolis. He later moved to Boston with his wife, and
12 attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning an advanced professional degree in
13 Naval Engineering. He subsequently moved back to Westerly and began his distinguished 37 year
14 career with Electric Boat, where he served in numerous important positions, including as the
15 Project Officer of the Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine, and as the Manager of the
16 Quonset Point Facility; and
17 WHEREAS, Mr. Nardone was very active in civic and community affairs throughout his
18 life. He served as a member of the Westerly School Committee for 17 years, serving as Vice
19 Chairman and later as Chairman. In 1972, he was appointed to the Rhode Island State Board of
1 Regents for Education and remained a member of that committee when it was renamed the Rhode
2 Island Board of Governors for Education, retiring as the Board’s Vice Chairman; and
3 WHEREAS, Mr. Nardone’s lengthy charitable endeavors include his long association
4 with Westerly Hospital, where he served on the Board of Trustees for more than thirty years and
5 had the Henry J. Nardone Community Center named in his honor. He also served on the Boards
6 of the Westerly Pawcatuck YMCA, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross, and
7 was a member of the Dante Society. He maintained a lifetime association with URI, serving as a
8 member of the Engineering Advisory Council, the URI Foundation, and endowed the Henry J.
9 Nardone Family Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate
10 of Laws from URI and an honorary Doctorate of Public Service from Rhode Island College; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Nardone was a man of deep faith. He helped to establish the CCD
12 program at the Immaculate Conception Parish and he and his wife were both awarded the St.
13 Edmund’s Medal of Honor for living lives of virtue in the spirit of St. Edmund; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Nardone leaves behind his children, Henry Nardone, Jr., and his wife,
15 Barbara, Michael Nardone, William Nardone, Esq., and his wife, Diane, Robert Nardone and his
16 wife, Patricia, and Andrea Frances Nardone, along with his eleven grandchildren, Henry
17 Nardone, III, and his wife, Linda, Jennifer McDonald and her husband, Brian, Zenia Morrone and
18 her husband, Brian, Heather Pescatello and her husband, Mark Zagol, Michaela Miceli and her
19 husband, Anthony, Alexandra Nardone, Robert Nardone, Jr., Christopher Nardone, Nicholas
20 Nardone, Madison Nardone and Wm. Chase Nardone. He also leaves behind ten great-
21 grandchildren, Angela Nardone, Dominic Morrone, Alec Morrone, Jack Henry McDonald,
22 McKenzie McDonald, Mia Miceli, Bennet Miceli, Mason Zagol, Ainslie Zagol, and Callen Zagol,
23 and is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased
24 by his brothers Gerard, Thomas and Joseph Nardone and his sisters Sarah Cardinal, Theresa
25 Ballato, Mary Kathrine Burdick, Lena Robinson, Beatrice Smith, and Anne Nardone; now,
26 therefore be it
27 RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
28 expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Henry Joseph Nardone, Sr., and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
30 transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Henry Nardone, Jr., Michael Nardone, William
31 Nardone, Esq., Robert Nardone, and Andrea Frances Nardone.
