In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating November 14, 2026, as “World Diabetes Day” in Pennsylvania. This resolution is substantially similar to Senate Resolution 191 of the 2025-26 Legislative Session.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that weakens the body’s ability to convert food into energy. It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or when cells become resistant to it, leading to high blood sugar levels which can lead to further medical issues.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 14.9% of U.S adults have diabetes (10.9% diagnosed, 4.0% undiagnosed). The CDC notes that adults with diabetes increased with age. 28.8% of those 65 years and older have diabetes.

CDC data as of 2023 estimates 32.7% of adolescents (ages 12-17) have prediabetes. Additionally, 42.6% of adults have prediabetes, and 52.1% of those 65 and older have diabetes.

Rising numbers in diabetes are linked with health complications, including heart disease, kidney issues, nerve damage, mental health concerns, hearing and vision loss, and weakened immune systems. There is no cure currently for diabetes, but risk can be managed through a healthy diet, physical activity, and prescribed medications.

Previous cosponsors of SR 191 were: Senators Cappelletti, Costa, Culver, Haywood, Hughes, Phillips-Hill, Street, Vogel and Senator Judy Ward.

I welcome you to co-sponsor this resolution and help raise awareness about living healthy lifestyles to combat the growth of diabetes in Pennsylvania.
