I intend to introduce legislation that protects mobile homeowners from unfair double taxation on their homes.

When an individual purchases a mobile home not affixed to and being sold with the land it sits on, they pay 6 percent sales tax. This same homeowner then pays property taxes again every year thereafter as if the mobile home was not already taxed as a vehicle at the time of sale. Other types of homes pay the Realty Transfer Tax at a significantly lower rate, meaning mobile homeowners are unfairly taxed in comparison to their peers.

My legislation would eliminate the yearly property tax on mobile homes so long as the home is not permanently affixed to a property owned by the homeowner and treated as real property. This legislation does not change how a mobile home is classified under law or how lot owners are taxed.

Homeowners deserve protection from unfair taxation. Government should make it easier and more affordable, not more difficult and costly, to own and live in a mobile home. I ask that you join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
