Respiratory therapists are highly educated and skilled health care professionals who provide life-saving and life-enhancing care to patients of all ages who have chronic or acute conditions that affect their ability to breathe. These professionals are responsible for providing interventions in emergency and critical care, neonatal and pediatric care, medical and surgical services, pulmonary diagnostics, sleep medicine, pulmonary rehabilitation, and home care. With an aging population, more than 35 million individuals living with a form of chronic lung disease, and 44 million cases of some type of acute respiratory disease diagnosed each year, among other factors, the employment growth rate for respiratory therapists is estimated at nine percent from 2025 to 2035, which is considered much faster than average.
The work of respiratory therapists is essential in helping Pennsylvanians live and breathe better. For that reason, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of October 25 through 31, 2026, as “Respiratory Care Week” in Pennsylvania. This designation will acknowledge and celebrate the dedication and extraordinary contributions of respiratory therapists across the Commonwealth.
Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize the work of such important professionals.
