As artificial intelligence use and innovation is becoming more common outside of the classroom, our schools need clear guidance for how students and educators should use these tools. Without standard policies, every school will approach questions of academic integrity, student privacy, transparency, and human oversight differently, which only creates more uncertainty for educators, students, and parents.
 
In order to address our critical gap in AI in education, the House Education Committee will be considering a package of bills intended to establish necessary guardrails for AI use and provide educators with meaningful resources and guidance on this technology. My legislation would require schools to adopt a clear local policy governing the responsible use of AI by students and staff. These policies would outline the acceptable and prohibited uses of AI, require human oversight of AI-generated content and high-stakes educational decisions, provide data transparency and privacy to students and families.
