In the coming days, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Signed on September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized the United States as a free and independent nation.

The treaty also holds a significant connection to Pennsylvania. It recognized the original 13 states, including Pennsylvania, as “free, sovereign and independent states,” and Benjamin Franklin served as one of the American negotiators and signatories to the agreement.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, we have an opportunity to recognize the people, events and milestones that helped secure the freedoms first declared in 1776. The Treaty of Paris represents one of those defining moments, marking the successful conclusion of the fight for American independence and securing international recognition of the new nation.
