As schools increasingly integrate artificial intelligence-related technologies and platforms into the classroom, we must set clear expectations to protect sensitive student data. We also have to ensure that automated systems do not make consequential decisions about students without educator oversight and supervision.

In order to address our critical gap in AI in education, the House Education Committee will be considering a package of bills intended to establish necessary guardrails for AI use and provide educators with meaningful resources and guidance on this technology. My legislation would create clear procurement guardrails for school entities contracting with third-party providers of AI-related technology.

Students and educators deserve to know that their personal information is handled responsibly when using emerging technologies. Establishing clear expectations for third-party AI providers will strengthen data security, protect student privacy, and keep people at the forefront of educational decision-making. These safeguards will also help school leaders navigate the rapidly changing technology landscape.

I respectfully invite you to co-sponsor this legislation. Together, we can help our schools continue to foster innovation in the classroom, while keeping students and educators protected.
