I intend to introduce legislation to more closely align Pennsylvania trucking with 25 other states that allow transportation of mixed loads containing specific low-risk hazardous materials.
 
Pennsylvania law permits commercial operation of highly automated vehicles (HAVs) for the hauling of certain items. Current statute, however, restricts the transport of hazardous materials by HAVs in a manner that has created ambiguity and operational challenges to this industry born in Pennsylvania.

This legislation will provide commonsense reform, directing PennDOT to issue guidance addressing the transport of certain low-risk hazardous materials such as nail polish, aerosols and other common household goods. The legislation also ensures that materials identified as higher risk under federal hazardous materials regulations remain prohibited from transport by these vehicles.

Companies will continue to be required to follow all applicable guidance issued by the Department, and all existing state and federal laws and regulations governing hazardous materials transportation will remain fully in effect.
