U.S. Route 222 is a critical transportation corridor connecting Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and the broader Interstate Highway System. Since the Commonwealth’s last comprehensive evaluation in 2003, significant population, economic and freight growth has contributed to increased traffic, congestion and transportation challenges along the corridor, underscoring the need for updated long-term planning.

To address these issues, I will soon introduce legislation urging the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to conduct a comprehensive Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study of U.S. Route 222 from the U.S. Route 422 interchange in Berks County to the Interstate 78 interchange in Lehigh County. The study would assess current and projected conditions, potential improvements, costs, environmental and community impacts, and potential state and federal funding opportunities.
