Fraternal benefit societies in Pennsylvania are longstanding mutual aid organizations created to serve the needs of communities by providing resources to help pay for life, health, accident, and other benefits to their members. Their statewide chapter infrastructure positions them to efficiently address needs in their communities in ways that governments cannot.
 
In Pennsylvania, more than 500,000 have volunteered in local fraternal benefit society chapters across the state, and the value of volunteer hours among these organizations is estimated to be over $60 million through charitable giving, educational programs, and volunteer activities. Additionally, they provide more than $17 billion in life insurance to protect members and their families from the unexpected and provide financial peace of mind.
 
Furthermore, the Ancient Order of United Workmen was the very first fraternal benefit society, and it was founded in Meadville, Pennsylvania on October 27, 1868. I am proud to honor our  history with these many hardworking organizations that have helped countless individuals, families, and communities for more than a century by introducing a resolution to recognize October 27, 2026, as “Fraternal Benefit Societies Day” in Pennsylvania.
