In the near future I will be introducing legislation to create parity within the clearance and background check process for those volunteering or working with children to ensure our kids are safe.

Currently, when someone applies to work or volunteer at a child day-care center, group day-care home or family child-care home, their name must be checked for its presence on the National Sex Offender Registry. However, if someone wants to work or volunteer with children in a different setting, the national registry is not checked.

When it comes to proper vetting of those entrusted with the welfare of our children, we cannot be diligent enough. Requiring that all employees or volunteers currently covered by our Child Protective Services Law receive the same thorough scrutiny will help to ensure that our children are in safe, trustworthy hands.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
