In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution designating September 2026 as “Veterans Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

We are facing a mental health crisis in our country among veterans and non-veteran adults. Suicides in our country, including Pennsylvania, occur at an alarming rate, and veterans are increasingly more likely to take their own life than a non-veteran adult. In 2023 alone, 6,398 veterans committed suicide. In Pennsylvania, we lose about 250 veterans per year to suicide.

These men and women served our country selflessly, and returned to civilian life only to struggle with severe mental health conditions including PTSD, anxiety, depression, or even a traumatic brain injury.

It is crucial to bring attention to this alarming trend, and to support the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in their community-based outreach efforts by connecting veterans in crisis to the best possible resources to help them live a safe, healthy life.

If you are a veteran in crisis, or are concerned about one, free and confidential support is available 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1.

We hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution to support our veterans.
