On September 25, 2026, Luzerne County will celebrate a remarkable milestone: 240 years since its establishment in 1786. To commemorate this anniversary and recognize the generations of Pennsylvanians who have shaped the county’s history, communities and character, we plan to introduce a resolution designating September 25, 2026, as “Luzerne County Day” in Pennsylvania.

Named in honor of Anne-C sar de La Luzerne, the French minister to the United States who supported the American cause during the Revolutionary War, Luzerne County has a history intertwined with the story of our Commonwealth and nation. From its earliest communities along the Susquehanna River to its rise as a center of anthracite coal and industry, the county has been shaped by generations of people whose hard work, determination and resilience helped build northeastern Pennsylvania.

For 240 years, Luzerne County and its residents have played an important role in the history and growth of our Commonwealth. The county’s rich anthracite coal reserves helped power Pennsylvania and the nation through the Industrial Revolution, while generations of miners, railroad workers, manufacturers, tradespeople and their families built the communities that continue to define the Wyoming Valley and northeastern Pennsylvania.

That legacy is also one of immigration, perseverance and community. Generations of families from around the world have made Luzerne County their home, creating the diverse neighborhoods, traditions, festivals, institutions and small businesses that remain central to the county’s identity today.

From Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton to Pittston, Nanticoke and the many boroughs and townships in between, Luzerne County is home to more than 300,000 Pennsylvanians who continue to contribute to the economic, cultural and civic life of our Commonwealth.

As Luzerne County celebrates its 240th birthday, this resolution provides an opportunity to honor the generations who built the county, celebrate the residents and communities who carry its traditions forward, and recognize the important role Luzerne County has played and continues to play in Pennsylvania’s story.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution designating September 25, 2026, as “Luzerne County Day” in Pennsylvania and celebrating 240 years of Luzerne County history, heritage and community.
