In the near future we intend to offer a condolence resolution honoring the life and achievements of former State Senator and former United States Congressman Tim Murphy, who passed away on July 18, 2026, at the age of 73.
 
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 11, 1952, Dr. Murphy was the son of John and Florence Rybicki Murphy. He graduated from Walsh Jesuit High School, Wheeling Jesuit College, and Cleveland State University before earning his doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
 
Before entering the political arena, he was known simply as “Dr. Tim,” a compassionate child psychologist and popular guest on local television who dedicated his early career to helping families navigate life's challenges.  He authored several books and co-authored the award-winning book, “The Angry Child.” He also taught at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
 
To his great credit, he served this country with honor and distinction as a Commander and psychologist with the United States Navy Reserve Medical Service Corps from 2009 to 2017.
 
Dr. Murphy began his tenure with the Senate in 1996, serving the 37th Senatorial District until 2003, and was the author of the Pennsylvania Patient Bill of Rights. He then went on to represent the 18th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives until 2017. During this time, Dr. Murphy was a leading voice for mental health reform and was instrumental in authoring and passing the 21st Century Cures Act. He also supported the continued operation of the 911th Air Force Reserve Base in Moon Township and advocated for trade protections for local manufacturing.
 
A man of great faith, Dr. Murphy was a longtime member of Saint Thomas More Church and served in leadership positions with a variety of organizations in his community. He enjoyed playing the guitar, gardening, fly fishing, hiking, camping, and traveling.
 
Dr. Murphy is survived by his beloved wife, Nanette; his daughter, Bevin DeSantis, and her husband, Dan DeSantis; and his three grandchildren, Thomasina, Luca, and Nico, all of Upper St. Clair.
